We celebrated this international event on the 15th, 16th and 21st of June.

On the 15th of June, each child at our school brought a plant in order to not only embellish the school, but also to contribute to reducing pollution on our planet … Indeed, our school is going “Green!”

On the 16th of June, children participated in a creative writing session, where each child was to write about what he/she knew on the topic of “Pollution”. I should say, we discovered quite a few writers!

Finally on the 21st June, our children went to La Chaumiere Compost Plant where they saw and learnt how organic waste is processed into compost which can be used as a sustainable fertiliser. In the school’s opinion, this was a healthy way to make the children realise that waste doesn’t have to be a waste !!!. Our children were very at ease with their queries and did ask a lot of relevant questions.

Of course, if you wish to know more, you can always just ask any of our Telfair kids who are now probably more knowledgeable on the matter.

For our second term outing, children were taken all the way from Tamarin to Curepipe in a big comfortable bus to visit the Fire station.

Our children were given a warm welcome by the team of firemen there. The firemen explained to our Telfair pupils about the precautions and the safety measures to be taken when a fire is spotted.

Our children became very engrossed when the fire officers demonstrated the various techniques used for extinguishing fires and also the equipment used to rescue people trapped in fire. The children asked a lot of questions, all of which were expertly addressed by the fire officers.

Lunch was taken in the Curepipe Botanical Gardens nearby and the children had fun in the play area.

It was then time to head to the Glass Gallery in Phoenix. Here the children got the chance to see the renowned “Hands of Fame” and the art of glass blowing.

Finally we all returned safely to school at the end of a very instructive and entertaining day.

On Tuesday 22nd March, the first outing of the year 2011 took Telfair International Primary School to Mahebourg. The 40 children were accompanied by all the staff members. After a long joyful trip from Tamarin our 60-seater bus had to be deftly maneuvered along the winding road to reach the biscuit factory. The 100-year old factory is set in a huge garden and we are made welcome by 2 hostesses and members of the Rault family.

The visit begins and it is brought to our attention that the mound of dry banana leaves outside the factory which is used as fuel. As we step inside we are able to discover the old scales beside the new electronic one used to weigh the “manioc” or tapioca root. The tuber is peeled and crushed to a fine powder and sugar added it all according to a well-kept secret recipe. The biscuits are cooked in a very old oven found in the middle of the room by experienced ladies. They are sorted and packed manually just as they have been traditionally done for the past 100 years.

Different flavours are available and we all very lucky to be treated to warm biscuits. The children had an opportunity to buy packets of biscuits to take home. All the children and the accompanying staff members will fondly remember the warm welcome and the kind members of the Rault family who made the trip worthwhile and memorable.
